Most horror movies in the 90s have been weak. With the exception of "Lost Highway," "Urban Legend," and "Scream," other original ideas for horror movies were poorly expressed on film. But the new movie Nightwatch (limited-release, opened in theaters in April 1998), a contemporary horror story set in a city morgue, is far better than most horror movies of the 90s. Directed with an excellent taste of style and creepiness by Ole Borndeale, Nightwatch turns out to be one of the best horror/thriller movies of the year. |
The movie follows the story of a young man, Martin Belos (Ewan McGregor), who finds a job as a watchman for the city morgue so he can pay his way through law school. Strange things start to happen when he works there, including dead corpses moving and spooky noises. Murders then start to occur at the morgue; someone, it appears, kills people, mutilates their bodies, and has sex with them before he moves them around, to look like they're the walking dead. Borndeale keeps the atmosphere creepy throughout the film and makes the viewer suspect different murderers by expressing the way they act. The ending is very satisfying and gut-wrenching--it is sure to keep you at the edge of your seat. |

The cast is wonderful, including an excellent performance by Josh Brolin as Martin's best friend. Patricia Arquette, THE best actress in Hollywood, gives an excellent portrayal as Martin's live-in girlfriend, Katherine. A relatively good performance is given by Nick Nolte as Inspector Cray, a detective that believes Martin is innocent. The only aspect of the movie that I didn't like, was that the movie gave up the killer's identity 3/4 through the movie, like "Snake Eyes." But that just makes the movie more thrilling since you know who the bad guy is and what he's going to do if someone tries to stop his plan of framing the grisly murders on the young, innocent Martin Belos. Nightwatch tops my list as one of the most thrilling movies of the year. An excellent screenplay also contributes to the effectiveness of the movie. The film's originality contributes to the suspense created in the film. I suggest that you rent the movie today at your local video store today. |
